Why waste the money JD, the article you posted says it all very clearly - MM missed another great opportunity to make $$ and Contribute something positive to our society! Reviews are always just one man's opinion of something. I prefer to see things for myself. More than once a reviewer has said something is fabulous and I've found it to be dreck, and vise versa. But I will agree: I don't think you can take a documentary too seriously if it ends with a rousing rendition of "The Internationale"!

I am hijacking this old thread to make it more general, if anyone wants to talk about movies.
Lots of hype around the opening of James Cameron's "Avatar". I was planning not to see it since it was released by FOX but my wife is excited by it. Oh well.
The movie sounds like the usual Hollywood affair: Eco-friendly forest dwellers vs. Technology-heavy Exploiters. No doubt the opening will be attended by vast numbers of Hollywood types in limousines with their Blackberrys, and they will go home to their 10,000 square foot energy-guzzling mansions in the Hollywood Hills.
But there is one aspect of modern movie-making that is good: Digital sets don't need materials to be built like regular sets, and not shooting in some foreign forests no doubt saves lots of transportation.

AVATAR's ads give me a headache on the HDTv so I have ZERO interest in blowing my head off at those ticket prices!
DIsney has a new one out that has hit the box office SMASH records - Guess there is money in the old fable of "Kissin Frogs" even though Dolphie swears they have COOTIES. OBTW so does the Medical folks:
The Walt Disney movie, "The Princess and the Frog," was the big winner at the box office this past weekend, taking in more than $25 million in ticket sales. The success of the movie has prompted an interesting warning. The American Veterinary Medical Association has issued a warning: do not kiss frogs. It says frogs can pass along a Salmonella infection when they are not handled properly. "We need to understand that there are potential concerns, and we need to follow through by practicing appropriate hygiene," said Dr. Mark Mitchell

Despite criticism by the right, "Avatar" is a smashing success with all demographics, and in all countries where it has been released, that is almost everywhere. The righties don't like its pro ecological, anti-military "message". Murdoch is, of course, a hypocrite. In it's early days, the Fox network was a trailblazer- "In Living Color", "The Arsenio Hall Show". "The Simpsons" etc. Green trumps political beliefs with guys like Rupert. He even became an American citizen so he could own more than 49% of broadcasting proiperties.

Bruce, Not sure of your source but I’ve never heard anyone right or left make a negative comment about Avatar in the context you suggest. I will buy a ticket and watch the movie, I’m interested in the graphics. For me your post would have greater meaning if you dropped the blanket statements.

Some critic somewhere said it had anti-war overtones. So what?Nobody WANTS war,but is sometimes unavoidable.Nothing wrong with promoting peace and good will, since we are a Christian Nation.Turn the other cheek unless it enslaves you to another.Just like people being upset with Brit Hume suggesting Tiger Woods find Jesus to help him through his turbulent moment he is experiencing from straying from the path of morality.Trying to promote greater morality in people used to be an honorable quest, but not in these days of seeing high morals as arrogance.

Why would you make blanket statements based on an opinion? Assume Do you want to discuss the authors persuasion?

Definately an opinion piece with an agenda!!! Most of his "conservatives" are film critics!!!!! Then he makes the statement of two Hollywood conservatives!!! There are more blank references to "conservatives" than actual sources to quote! WHERE IS ONE NATIONALLY KNOWN, POLITICALLY ACTIVE, CONSERVATIVE QUOTED? Don't bother looking, he didn't name any. Conservatives don't have anything against treating our world well. It's in the very nature of our "conservative" name! It is the manner in which the progressives want to take, control, tax and manipulate this country in the name of environmentalism. If Gore is the poster child, it shows that they are just after the power, money and votes. In reality, they care less than conservatives but have a better team of salesmen in this field. Just like the statement "A crisis is a terrible thing to waste," they will take advantage of the environmentalists all the way to the bank. They don't support anything that won't provide a gain for more power! The same thing now exists with the Health Plan. Most of it was to gain more control and power over the people. Take off the blinders!!!! OH, by the way, I intend to see the movie also. Christmas Day and New Year's Day the lines were to long! I will wait until the lines are shorter. Movie theater contracts give the theaters a very small percentage of the ticket sales during the opening and progressively increase the percentages as the movies are shown the following weeks. That is why they love long running movies. The theaters make more money. I would rather the majority of the money I pay support our local businesses!
