Th Russian military has lost face and the Ukrainians can gloat about the Rusdians retreating from Kherson, but tactically it was a necessity. When will this war end? Kelensky says he will not negotiate until the Russians leave Ukraine, in others words after they win. Why should they compromise? They seem to have unlimited support from NATO.

Occasionally there is some point worth mentioning on the Ukraine. Today the NYT says that the Pentagon is worried about the rate the Ukrainian army is using up artillery shells and showing poor fire discipline, probably because they believe NATO has an endless supply.

We all remember the famous Schiller quote “Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain”. Well, the incredible stupidity of arming Ukraine seems unstoppable, so we will have to suffer the consequences.

As always, the facts are hard to determine in the Ukraine war. The debate is if in fact the Ukrainian army has suffered 100,000 deaths, and of course much more than that injuries. How much longer can NATO’s war on Russia be sustained? Also, there are rumors of serious munitions shortages. As I say, war is fun, at first.

It is amusing to watch the rate munitions are being expended on both sides in the war. Let’s make wagers on which side will run out first.

It would be interesting to see what the West would do if the Ukrainian Army collapsed.

The Ukrainian War is really looking like WWI. Incremental advances and retreats from trenches. Armor, which broke the stalemate on the Western Front in 1918, have been rendered by new anti-tank weapons ineffective, and have prevented the mobile warfare typical of 1939-1945. It will probably mean the outcome of the war will come down to economic pressures, and the partition of Ukraine.

Headlone from NYT: “Without Hesitation, Ukraine Goes Toe to Toe With Russia in Bakhmut. Earlier in the war, Ukraine’s leadership was more equivocal about pitched battles with high casualties. There’s no second-guessing this time. Some analysts say it makes sense strategically.”
It makes sense propaganda-wise. Gotta show your Western financial backers you are kicking ass, no matter how many Ukrainian soldiers die.

I know the Ukrainians are not supposed to be pro-Nazi but I’m seeing the old Wehrmacht cross on Ukrainian tanks, so what am I supposed to think? Maybe I saw wrong.

I try to follow the struggle in Ukraine, but it’s very time consuming. And like the Great War, advances are being measured in meters instead of kllometers. That is good, as I say elsewhere, the best we can hope for is stalemate, either side losing being very dangerous.

Another day, another American escalation. Here, have some Abrams. They’re gratis. Now go kill Russians!

I still get my daily update on the war from Alexander Mercouris, which while slanted pro-Russia, seems to be the most credible source of information. The war is a slow-motion train wreck. I hope it stays that way despite continuing NATO escalations. A stalemate may lead to a ceasefire. Hey, the defense firms can still make megabucks restoring NATO weapon stockpiles.

There is lots of talk in the Pro-Ukrainian press about Russians using “human waves” on the battlefield. Maybe, but I am skeptical. The excruciatingly slow progress of the Russians hints to me that they are being very deliberate in their tactics to limit casualties.

So Gen. Milley tells us that Russia has lost “strategically, operationally, and tactically”. Maybe. But I’m hearing Bakhmut is about to fall. Of course, I’ve been hearing that for weeks. Still, he really didn’t answer a question about Ukraine running out of artillery shells that NATO might not be able to replace. Stay tuned…
