In history, new waves of immigrants have often been more successful than the natives. Not always, of course, but often. Part of the reason could be the immigrants have come with their families intact while the natives have had theirs torn apart by racial and class war.

Jack O, I read the article and 50 people attended this "event." Just as you and Bruce have told us via polls, O is still popular with the electorate, exactly where does that put racism in the US? Is racism dead in the US? No; BUT there is less now than previously. Jack, obviously you did not come to the Tea Party EC! The Marine Col., I chatted with was Black! I saw a diverse community at the EC PO and all were talking about the POLICIES of O. Apparently to your thinking anyone who disagrees with O does so because he/she is a racist! Amazing!!!

Some of the people in this building are so technically challenged!Somebody tried to use the computer to put on the Anti-virus 2009,and screwed it all up.Then they paniced and began hitting all keys on the keyboard. These people, many of them, think they have hi-def TV,even with a 15 year old set and basic cable, because they see the hi-definition sign when they watch the ch.8 news. Back to the topic, one incident in 1959 or 1960 happened which absolutely stunned me,a 13 year old kid.The Giants had spring training in Phoenix in a dinky park just south of downtown.A story broke on TV and in the paper that brought me into reality. The Giants stayed at the Hotel Adams downtown.Except the black players:they stayed at McCoy's Motel,a collection of run down cabins east of downtown.Giants management approached the management of the Adams and requested that the blacks be allowed to stay there. After 3 days of negotiations(!) it was agreed they could stay at the Adams, but only if they came in through the rear alley and used the back door, and didn't use the elevator. This came as a shock that such a great player as Willie Mays, and a young Willie McCovey had to suffer this indignity. This went on for a few days, then they decided to enter the front door, walk through the lobby, and go up in the elevator.A clerk said something about caalling the police. The manager wisely decided it wouldn't be good publicity to have the two Willie's confronted by the police. From that day on,the issue was over. What was unbelievable were the letters to the editor, supporting this "policy".Thank god there was no talk radio then! It is very good of you to lend your "techie" support to your neighbors! However, today, 50 or 51 years later, anyone can stay in any hotel. I know because we were in Las Vegas at the Mirage (5 or 6 years ago) and Charlie Joiner and his family were on the same floor as us. My cousins (another trip) were staying at the Wynn saw a baseball player (can't remember his name but he plays for the Cubs), he's Latino. I think racism is fortunately dying a death; but, as Hatch pointed out, the stupid gene is still in the collective pool and it is going to take more time to eradicate this mindless vacuity.

Poor Lou. You never heard of the Black Eyed Peas? They have been around for years and sold millions of units (recorded music). Incredible. And don't blame age, I'm 64 and a fan of their's.

When was the last time time there was a riot in San Diego? 40 or 45 years ago? When was there last a riot in California?* The "Rodney King" riots in the early 90's. Were you aware the majority of rioters were hispanic? Seems like you may be living in the past.
*not including prison "riots".

San Diego has been my home base for about 50-55 years and I don't recall ever a riot. There was a problem in the 80's a kid shot a SD cop I think his last name was Penn (sp) maybe there were some minor rioting then. Bruce, do you recall?

It isn't what I recall on the news. Particularly the scene where the truck driver gets pulled from the truck! Also during that time the Orientals stated they were protecting their businesses from the blacks rioting. But then CNN and the other alpha bet channels always put on a slant, don't they. Agreed there have not been many large riots in California but you seem to conviently forget the Watts riots in LA. That was definately mostly blacks and they were shooting at fire trucks and police. My brothers friend was in the National Guard and was posted to ride on a fire truck for their protection!

The only statistic I could find, 51% of those arrested were Hispanic, that is a very small majority. Interesting Korean and other Asian store owners were primarily the target of violence. 53 people died. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots

The LA riots of '92.
That was the year my mother died. When the riots were going on, she was in Coronado hospital, and I was driving back and forth from La Mesa to the hospital on a daily basis.
As a break, I used to go down to the ER and hang out. On one of those nights, I ran into a coworker, and we sat in the ER room watching the riots on the TV. He asked me what route I took home. I always got off the bridge and took the Imperial exit before getting onto 94. There is one light there, and it is a long and deserted light at night, and I usually stayed late into the night.
He told me to not take that route anymore, that there were blacks who were looking to pull whites out of their cars. I took his advice and started driving up to the 8. He was a black coworker.
Make of that what you will, Bruce.

Not a pretty time. The thing I remember most (besides the goofy rumor that the riots had spread to Parkway Plaza of all places) were the pictures of Korean store owners standing on the roof of their stores with rifles ready to blow the brains out of any of their former customers who tried to loot their precious goods...shopkeeper values, I guess...

Not a pretty time. The thing I remember most were the pictures of Korean store owners standing on the roof of their stores with rifles ready to blow the brains out of any of their former customers who tried to loot their precious goods...shopkeeper values, I guess... When one joins a mob in a riot and comes for your place, they are no longer customers. Those "customers" could care less the nice things you provided for them, any discounts or other favors you extended to them for being steady customers. They are coming to do damage and steal what ever they can! Those Koreans and other Orientals were defending their businesses (and homes). Those merchants don't all make big money, most are just getting by and live in or above their stores to make ends meet. The damage done by the riots and the fires, etc. absolutely ruin more than just the physical property and its contents. Many business owners do not survive the damage and go out of business. Insurance companies only provide for so much. After the businessman pays off his debtors first, they are usually left with little to rebuild! Some are fortunate to find jobs and some end up on public assistance. Not just in riots, but in other disasters such as in New Orleans, a majority of the small businesses closed up for good! The ability to refinance to build a new business is very difficult, especially when you are renting the facilities. New people who had access to money moved in and started new businesses. Many related to the construction industry to help rebuild the area. A time will come when many of them will reach a saturation point and lack of continued work. They will either leave or change their business to something else needed in the area. You don't just have it in for the "rich" CEO's but any successful business person!
