I really appreciate the idea of having a thread minus the bickering. My family is split when it comes to politics, and even a faint illusion to the subject is sure to injure or offend. So, we've adopted a policy of silence. You know Thumper's "If you can't say nothin' nice, don't say nothin' at all."? Well, we don't say nothin'! As far as day to day life: My dad and I just got a planter all set up in the backyard with veggies and everything, which I am very excited about. We have a dog. These last few days, I have come out in the morning to find pawprints in the soil and little red onions dug up and strewn across the garden. I was hoping the height might be enough to deter her, but it seems I'm going to have to invest in some little fence pieces or something. Oh well, such is life!

Hi honeybee.... one possible solution that worked for me and is safe.... mousetraps in the planters. Set them and put them upside down... it doesnt hurt the dog or cat, but scares the hell out of them.

If the upside down liberal mechanism animal proposed doesn't work, try Bonemeal or Bloodmeal which seems to detour animals of all types except ones in AZ

I have always been amazed at how families become so different. Mine especially has been "infiltrated" by that marriage deal but as time goes by and they all come to the alter of "hey dad, can you help"...well let's just say they don't like the "liberal reference" they get with it! Slowly but surely the lights go on...

honeybee,
It sounds like your dog had a blast in the garden! It probably thought you set it up just for you.
BTW - if you wish to share pictures/etc about your dog and or gardening - on the home page of these forums, down mid page - you will find sections devoted to gardening and a thread devoted to pets.
So far - Turk kicks our backsides when it comes to veggies. When he posts his pictures - you get hungry just looking at them.

This will become my own little section... cool After a nice relaxing weekend, I actually did little to nothing today other than bring in the trash cans and get the choppers adjusted. After telling the wife I felt lazy this weekend cuz I get so tired, she said "why the hell do you think they have you off work on medical? You ARE ill... so take it easy and dont worry". Well, maybe she is right.... so I am. Tomorow I pick up a BowFlex machine.... am setting up a small gym in the house in one of the bedrooms.... Craiglist has all kinds of crap thats like new that people bought and never used. OK, carry one:)

It was a wonderful day to work outside, light breeze, puffy clouds overhead and 67 degrees. I took my break by stripping down sunbathing on the deck over the pond. Unfortunately I fell asleep and my ass is sunburned.

Bloodmeal is expensive and pretty much ineffective, it’s useful life is about 48 hours, rain or high humidity limits it’s effective life. A fence would probably be your best solutions. There are chemical solutions but I as an organic farmer always seeks alternatives and I’ve tried many. Your dog is digging because the ground is fluffy and soft after planting also I bet you used manure, compost or a fertilizer, dogs dig for the smell. I have the same problem with coyotes. I’ll prepare the plot and let it sit for weeks before planting.
