I'm listening to Rush this morning talking about Honduras and Obama, and Rush was accusing Obama of "siding with the bad guys all over the world". Funny, I think Rush is the bad guy. But heaven forbid Obama side with Hugo Chavez, democratically elected leader of Venezuela, who has been methodically demonized by the American press, including the so-called liberal LA Times, who regularly editorializes against him. But I'm sure the right wing media will try to get as much anti-Obama mileage as possible out of the Honduras situation, no matter what the truth is. The truth is, as usual, of no consequence.

It was about 22 years ago working in Fiji I witnessed a military coup. To the best of my recollection no one cared or responded. The first thing the military did was shut down public transportation (which was pretty feeble anyway) and institute a curfew. It was a real pain in the ass I was in Suva and had to get to Nadi, the otherside of the island.

Military coup takeover of Fuji? You could accomplish that with a Boy Scout troop

Chavez attempted, and failed a bloody coup d'etat against former President Carlos Perez in 1992, but, finally won the election in 1998 by sucking up to the poor.
His ideology came from the likes of Noam Chomsky.
The Venezuelans drafted and adopted a new constitution in 1999, which lengthened the presidential term from 5 to 6 years, and established a two term limit.
Feeling his oats and enjoying his role as a pain in the ass of free nations in this hemisphere, he attempted to end presidential term limits, which, of course, failed.
Chavez is an avowed socialist that has seized control of broadcast television stations. He is the one single OPEC leader that in 2006 pushed for lower oil production in order to drive oil prices higher.
The ousted president of Honduras, also a leftist, was an important reason we didn't set up a satellite division in Honduras- that and the brutal murder of one of our relatives in San Pedro Sula by a leftist activist group.
But, may God damn Rush for eternity if he even mentions Zeyala and Obama in the same sentence.

Sorry to hear the loss of a relative, Hatch. Murder is disgusting no matter who does it.
As for Chavez, heaven forbid he should suck up to that poor Venezuelan rabble. He should have sucked up to the wealthy like the GOP does here. And shame on him for not wanting to keep the price of oil artificially low like Saudi Arabia has dutifully done for decades.
How much Noam Chomsky have you actually read?

Interesting Obama was very quick to condemn the action in Honduras and slow to respond regarding Iran.

Jdredd, would you believe that prices are artificially high?
There are tankers moored offshore around the planet, full of oil, with no place to go.
I have read only one, well part of one of Chomsky's books: American Power an the Mandarins. Without that eye opening book, one could still get a feel for his unique view of the US and the world from all of the articles about him.
What are your thoughts about him?

I've not read all that much of Noam myself, but what I have read I think he's pretty spot on about America's role in the world.
About oil: I think I mentioned that Saudi Arabia has been over-pumping for years. That some of that excess oil had ended up in tankers parked at various locations tells me that someone is trying to force the price of oil UP.

jdredd,
We taught them how to do that. The Texas Railroad Commission used supply to regulate prices for the East Texas Oil. They played a significant role in setting prices nationally up to the seventies. Saudi, Kuwait and others sent students to the University of Texas in order to learn petroleum engineering and supply side economics. There is no supply and demand explanation for gas prices going up in the summer each and every year. But at least we are not speculating in tulips or tulip futures.

I didn't know about Saudi Arabia and Kuwait sending students to UT but it makes sense. And at least tulips don't cause global warming!
Apparently only the US right is backing the Army in Honduras. The OAS and the UN are against the coup. I'm so glad the Neocons are out of the White House.

And at least tulips don't cause global warming! Do you have any idea how much liberal manure is required to produce an acre of tulips? Tulips may not fill your gas tank but tulips keep wooden shoes on the Dutch, another falling tree.

I will be the first to admit I know little about the current situation in Honduras. Was the ex-president elected, if so then the military coup should be condemed.
