Hatch, It may be that we need both. If everyone has a card and is required to carry it than we are not singling any group out. If all employees have to go through e-verify than again we have a uniform rule that everyone is subject to. Despite efforts to the contrary there is still discrimination when it comes to employement. If you do not have transportation and a phone it is hard to get employement even in good times. No matter what they do to the current system there is going to be a need for records. Make the national ID card include a fingerprint. You know illegal aliens are not the only law-breakers who use false identification.

I would have no problem with fingerprints encoded in the magnetic strip in an ironclad code.
Right now, I am in seek and destroy mode. My offices were broken into over the weekend, trashed and petty cash stolen. Computers, digital cameras and other items were left where they were. The surveillance video, however, danced out with the thieves.
Our property in Chandler was vandalized a few weeks ago. The jerks broke in, slept in the house for a time and took a few things.
Then, just 30 minutes ago, my wife emailed me to tell me that our block wall around the back yard was tagged by known gang-bangers. The police are familiar with the gang. They tagged us before and their signs are all over Escondido. They are mostly illegals. But, of course, with no witnesses...

I don't know how it is in Escondido, but in SD the chances of catching jerks like the scum that broke into your offices or the slime that tagged your wall are slim to none. Is it now your fault that the wall is tagged and are you required to paint it or face some type of fine?

Escondido PD and the City have an anti-graffitti group that sends someone out to photograph it and remove it.
Time to go see. I may take some snapshots and post them.

A friend of mine in Bonita had a VW stolen by an illegal, her son spotted the car on Southwestern's campus parking lot. It took almost $12,000.00 lawyer's fees to recover the car. It was trashed by the "owner" as he claimed. She said the most assistance and best help she received was from the Sheriff's office. Can the Sheriff's office help you?

Hatch, I feel your pain, in the last 5 years I’ve been burglarized 5 times. After the 4th theft I began carrying a .38 now a .45 and it was the 5th time I caught the guys.
In Carlsbad graffiti is removed by the city, private or public property the city is on it in 24 hours or less.
Hang in there, in the yellow page look under “R” for rottweiler.

Lou, Jack, thanks. It is disturbing to say the least.
But, the grafitti and the break in are two distinct and unrelated events.
The tag was gang related, possibly involving illegal alien gang bangers. This has been confirmed.
The office thing could have been anyone. It was simply about getting hold of easy cash.
I make this statement because I do NOT want a new wave of misguided anger to start as a result of these events.
I already have had three phone calls. Chill out!

Hatch-sorry to hear about your bad luck.Back in October some broke into my place and stole my checkbook, all my meds, and a few misc.items.The meds really hurt as it cost me $550 to replace them.Unbelievably I got a hold of a live person at Union Bank and cancelled the account at 7pm on a Saturday night.None of my meds are narcotics so they must have been pretty disappointed. To add insult to injury, they stole my pillowcase to carry their loot.I didn't quite understand Lou's story about the stolen car.$12,000 to the lawyer, how much was the car worth and if it was an expensive, why no insurance."It was trashed by the owner as he claimed" makes no sense at all.Maybe I'm a little slow in my old age,but who was the "he" who claimed it was trashed by the owner?Maybe Lou can clarify it for me.

Bruce, I was glad to read that the bank worked with you. I was very sorry about the meds. I would suppose they are important for your ability to live life comfortably, if at all.
We reach a stage in life when our lives depend on these things. It's pretty damned low to take them away from someone.
For what it's worth, Lou's story rings true for reasons I can't post. We are still going through the nightmare.
edit: And it is still costing me money I can't afford to keep shelling out.

Bruce, Looks like another thing we all have in common and that's being the victims of crime. My poor old Toyota pick-up truck was stolen twice, once in '85 and again in '92. The last time it was recovered in Mexico. When I lived in PB, our house was burglarized while we were on vacation in '95 and I know what a helpless and frustrating experience it is. It's fairly safe where I live now and that's just because there's only one main road into and out of our neighborhood. We're also somewhat removed from any commercial areas or freeway access. The last time I was robbed was while getting my car serviced at my Toyota dealer last month - I gotta find a good mechanic.

My medications are for hypertension and diabetes, and the high blood pressure meds are probably keeping me alive as when I first went to the doctor my blood pressure was 260/140 and the doctor freaked out and said I was a "ticking time bomb". I simply didn't understand Lou's post,I'm not questioning it's veracity. I live on the tenth floor of a high-rise and whoever broke in was pretty bold with 14 other residents on my floor,in broad daylight. They didn't take my computer and high def TV,that might have attracted too much attention. It was the first break-in in at least 15 years here.

Bruce, because the illegal who had the car produced a "bill of sale," the la Vista police told my friend that she had to take him to court even though she had the pink slip. The illegal (this came out via her lawyer) was going to school on public monies (State) and Southwestern provided legal council for him in order to fight this battle. The VW was her oldest son's car and he was killed in Iraq, so the intrinsic value of the car meant more to her than its actual value. She won the case and he had to return the car to her (or loose his funding), hence the trashing. Her husband and youngest son as well as her brothers refurbished the car which her granddaughter now drives to school (UD, Denver). Hope this clears the confusion.

Bruce, so sorry to hear you suffered a break-in as well. I don't know if this is accurate; but a friend of mine's mother suffered a robbery/break-in in La Mesa. Her medications also had been stolen along with other items and she (the mother) said Medicare reimbursed her for her meds. Could this be a possibility for you?

Lou-no,no help from medicare as I'm not eligible for it until August.,when I turn 65,I pay for everything out of pocket,my income is too high for Medical or medicaid, state programs.By the way,$550 may not seem like a lot but it is about 22% of my monthly income.I went through most of my savings for medical expenses in two years, along with helping pay expenses for a young relative with leukemia, whose parents had insurance but it was inadequate and they owed$225,000 when he died. They finally had to declare bankruptcy and lost their home in Spring Valley. Speaking of relatives, one of my grandsons,Matthew Brown was chosen as an athlete of the week by the UT,his picture is on the back page of the sports section of today's UT(terrible picture). Thanks Lou,for clarifying the car theft story.

Bruce, Your grandson is also mentioned in the on-line edition - the picture just looks like he's got his game face on - you must be very proud. Matt Brown Baseball St. Augustine The senior left fielder and DH slammed two home runs and four doubles, hitting .615 with nine RBI and six runs as the Saints won the Lions Tournament Division AAAA title.
