“Peace through strength” is the dogma that has served the US and many countries through history as a means of deterrence. It has been conventional wisdom for us since 1941. Certainly it is the guiding directive of the “Deep State” no matter which idiot is in the WH. Now we are escalating our military aid to Ukraine in the hopes of deterring the perceived Russia intentions for aggression. Will it work? One can only hope, since the USA has no Peace Party, other than the pathetic Greens, and I’m not even sure about them. Maybe I’ll move to New Zealand.

Well, so far deterrence seems to be working in Ukraine. Keep your fingers crossed.

Putin has activated his nuclear forces. Maybe he believes in Peace through Strength, by giving NATO a warning.

The thing about “Peace Through Strength” is it can’t be disproven. If it fails, it’s simply that you needed more strength.

“Peace is meaningless unless it is backed by power,” Mr. Yoon said during the campaign. “War can be avoided only when we acquire an ability to launch pre-emptive strikes and show our willingness to use them.” So says the new President of South Korea.

In another bow toward militarism in the NYT today, there’s a column proclaiming the US is falling behind China in military power in the Western Pacific. No doubt the China bashers are frustrated at the all the attention going to the Ukraine. Looks like Peace Through Strength is getting more and more expensive. Just how much strength is enough? No one knows. But going broke is probably not a good idea for national security.

Here’s the question: If Ukraine had kept their nukes, would Russia have invaded? Would Ukraine have used them?

Is deterrence still working?

Watched the unveiling of the B-21. Pretty spiffy. And guess what? It was made in the dystopian nightmare of California. I wonder how many Teslas and Range Rovers were n the parking lot?

So I wonder: is Deterrence holding in Ukraine? For who? How much is NATO holding back because of Russian nuclear might?

I commented on a speech by Senator Roger Wicker advocating a massive buildup of Taiwan’s military to deter Beijing, comparing Taiwan to Ukraine. What I wonder is if the Taiwanese are as gung-ho about fighting against China as the Ukrainians were fighting Russia. Are they just as bloodthirsty as the Slavs? Just asking.

That’s the thing about “Peace through strength”: it can never be disproved. If war breaks out, no matter how strong you were, it wasn’t strong enough.

I’m pretty sure we can kick China’s ass if they try anything over Taiwan, but what would be the cost? The world’s economy? How many thousands of American lives? Is our “strength” really a deterrent? We can only hope, but what a gamble. Of course a political solution is out of the question as no politician can afford to be seen as “soft on China”.

I’m still contemplating the conventional wisdom that is “Peace Through Strength”. I suspect it is as old as the human race, that if one caveman looks like the strongest, the others will leave him alone. Is that what they call the “Law of the Jungle”? Did Jesus believe in it? Allah? Buddha? History shows it doesn’t always work, but how many wars were avoided because of it? No way of knowing. Does it work in marriage?
