Hatch, I will repeat that our own military leaders have stated that mistreatment of detainees is the single biggest recruiting tool our enemies have. I would also suggest that the term enemy combatant is not something you could prove for every detainee at gitmo. I think there comes a time when the opinion of the world really does matter. I think Gates would tell you that NATO is not the rock solid alliance it used to be. The issue here is that there was collusion to create a legal cover for acts that were known to be illegal. That is plainly a form of conspiracy.
Bruce- I put a link to a site that lists a summary of each of the memos, but even the released memos are in a redacted form or are not complete due to national security concerns. This was not a blind impulsive release. The information released was screened prior.

You may be right, Larry, they do tend to live by the old adage: An eye for an eye. But, they also seem to live by An eye for a handout or hand up. Case in point: Taliban.
I think you may be surprised at what is defined as enemy combatant and at the similar definitions of its variants. A citizen of a country can even be considered as such by his own country. Walker should never have been brought home.
Look, I cannot and will not argue your allegation about collusion. I am just not ready yet. I prefer to avoid reading into what a magic marker doesn't say. Then again, I won't defend what it is hiding, either.
It's too bad about NATO. It used to be a useful use of good fodder. Of course, the direction of attack changed and so did the means of attack. Some was from within, some from the outside. Given the current economic situation over there, I doubt whether brotherly alliances will hold up much longer when nationalist tendencies start suspecting the innocence of a Euro. Damn, it's getting harder and harder to decide whose currency to buy these days.
And as subsidy's shine begins to tarnish, and that is funny just reading it, the concept of dole will take on a whole new meaning across the pond. Anyone want to go in with me and buy a country? For just one California, we could own three of the G-7-1/2. (I may be off base on that one. Sorry. Vermont, perhaps).

VAST WAR POWERS
The secret legal opinions issued by Bush administration lawyers after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks included assertions that the president could use the nation's military within the United States to combat people deemed as terrorists and to conduct raids without obtaining a search warrant.
-Herald Tribune
Although the memos were never secret, no one really knows what the former administration was up to.

I am glad to be able to talk again with all of you. I enjoy discussing topics will all of you and like to read what everyone has to say, even when I disagree with it.

Hatch, I found the "Fire Truck" a very interesting construction. Here's a thought, could the release of these memos just be another attempt to side-track the focus of the nation from the crashing economy and the, so far, feeble attempts to "fix" this economy with incredible pork?

Lou, good question.
Another one could be: Is Obamamemogate also a smoke screen about the missing $550 Billion?

Lou-"feeble attempt to fix the economy"?Incredible pork? Less than 2% of the stimulus bill is "pork" and even many of these are worthwhile. All earmarks are not bad.

Hatch, Did you bring up the missing $500 billion? Andrew and I just had a little chat about that on the RR site. If we knew enough about it and I knew how to create a new topic, that one, I think, would be worth it. September 15, 2008, $500 billion disappeared in electronic run ................. hotair.com/archives/2009/02/10/video-the-day-the-global-economy-almost-diedBTW, I agree. It would be nice to hear from Gene. You have his email, right? G'night, all.

Could it be that they broke the law? We had long conversations about FISA and I remember being told that I must be some kind of sympathizer. I have more than sympathy for our consitution and the wisdom of seperation of powers. You realize I hope that at least half of the stimulus is the tax cuts the republicans wanted. Like the rest of the RR faithful you have somehow bought into the idea that we could stimulate the economy without spending money. That is what got us here and is not what is going to get us out.

When people complained about FISA and spying on American citizens, we were told that "if you are not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about," which didn't address the issue at all, but now there is proof that the people who tried to explain this away saying that none of this applied to American citizens were just plain wrong.

Peter, The other problem is that it seems the guys at justice were willing to run interference. Those are lines that are not supposed to be crossed in war or peace. There is more than just a little smoke here. I would like someone willing to engage on the specifics of the memos and the consitutionality of the White Houses behavior. I am willing to give odds that when we dig some of this out what is underneath will be very rotten.

So far no charges have been leveled! Just lots of scowling and frowning at the "shredding of the Constitution" this from an AG who sought amnesty for a terrorist group! Golly gee, foreign operatives in the country, foreign communications, yes, indeed, the first duty of the president is to look to civil liberties lawyers and get their best advice! No, I have an idea that you don't throw good money after bad! But, of course, apparently learning from history is something the current clown crop has yet to grasp!
