Re: Squirrels and gophers
I found a product at Lowe's that actually seems to work. It is not a poison so I do not need to worry about collateral damage.
I have tried the gopher pellets in the ground and unfortunately the little beasts come to the surface to die. I worry about the predators being poisoned.
I had tried the - run water down their tunnels and that works for a short while.
Someone suggested placing coffee grounds around the openings of their tunnels (I did not try that one yet - though I did purchase some cheap coffee grounds )
The product I found seems to have chased off the gophers AND the squirrels - but not my raccoon and the Norwegian tree rats (there is an avocado tree they love next to my home).
Uncle Ian's Mole & Gopher, Deer, Rabbit & Squirrel repellent.
It is a combination of chili powder and 89% is dried blood product.
I went from a destroyed lawn and garden and an infestation of tons of gophers AND ground squirrels to none of the gophers or squirrels.
(the squirrels and gophers just appeared this year - we did not have them previously. I think the house being re-constructed next door shook them out of their home AND I think people have been dumping the squirrels in the field next to my home)
It has been two months that I have been squirrel and gopher free. Last sprinking of Uncle Ian's was 1 month ago.
The rats - I put out the poison pellets, directly in their pathway. (they were going along the fence railings rather than the ground) I was careful so that the birds would not eat the pellets.
I love my birds, lizards and the immature raccoon is ok for now... as long as he does not bring his family to meet me. I don't feed the 'coon yet he is not afraid of humans.
For now - I have been working on greening up this place - thus ornamentals and lawn is what I have been working on. Next year will be an experiement with vegetables - in containers.
btw - the Topsy Turvy - I have some friends who are successfully growing tomatoes and zucchini squash using the Topsy Turvy. They live in Vista, CA.
