I agree with jdredd that I think Ms. Sotomayor will turn out to be a solid moderate voice and will probably pleasantly surprise conservatives over time.
She will do fine, I suspect. I actually have a feeling Obama may regret his choice. Not putting money on it. Just sayin'... I may actually invest in TiVo.

Howe many times do I have to repeat: it was NOT a ruling on the "reverse discrimination". It was on whether the city was acting legally on their IMPLEMENTING of the law, NOT the law. C'mon Tired, you re smart enough to understand. I guess you'd rather misinterpret it to prove a point. Bruce, Technically you are correct, however whether she is supporting a racist city law or defending racist activity in application of that law is not so clear. It does not matter now as she is the next SOTUS appointment. But for the sake of clarity, johng, it really does matter. So many people go around calling judges activist based on the prevailing party. Bruce is completely correct. She ruled on the LEGAL CORRECTNESS of the lower court ruling, not on the LAW at issue in that ruling. IF she has followed temptation and ruled instead on the fairness of the law, and found in favor of the firefighters, then she would have been - HERE IT COMES - activist. She only ruled withing the parameters of what her court was supposed to judge. This is what makes her a good judge and will make her a good supreme court justice. I agree 100% that the Republicans did themselves a horrible disservice by fighting her appointment and mischaracterizing her record on the bench.

The idea that Sonya Sotomayor has ever made any decisions based on race or gender is absurd. It is fabricated. A review of all of her decisions makes this quite clear. In nearly 100 cases which had anything to do with race in any way before her as a circuit judge, the decisions found AGAINST charges of racism on all but about 3 decisions. She is also not a rogue. In all but a couple of those decisions, there was at least one Republican nominated judge on the panel, and nearly every single decision was unanimous, meaning Sotomayor rarely disagreed with the conservatives on her panels. I agree with jdredd that I think Ms. Sotomayor will turn out to be a solid moderate voice and will probably pleasantly surprise conservatives over time. I also think if the Republicans had put up more of a fight against her it would have come back to haunt them. I will be interesting to see what will happen when Obama nominates an actual liberal to the court. I'm going to have the popcorn ready for that one. The case with the Firefighters/exam was racist - no matter the spin placed on it. But her job was not to determine whether or not the ruling was racist. Her job was to determine whether or not the city ruled within the law. It is at the Supreme Court where the fairness of the law gets judged. That's why our system is what it is. Well, she never has, so that's a good sign.
