Palin Resigns
A new thread because I suspect there’s lot to be said. Certainly the left will continue to vilify her as some seem to pleasure in disparaging her character. She not your slick talking Chicago politician but hey if you want slick you got it.
I would not have thought it possible anyone could upstage Michael Jackson but rumors regarding Palin will abound for weeks to come.

I must admit when McCain nominated Palin I thought it was a genius move. But then her appeal turned out to be more limited than I thought. The rural/redneck thing did not go over so well with lots of urban people (Did you ever see pictures of her Dad's house with the giant piles of antlers in the front yard and the dozens of wildlife heads mounted in the house?). And I also heard that lots of women were turned off, maybe as many as men who were turned on, by her being a beauty queen (It's that winner/loser thing that divides Americans I keep telling you about). So where she goes from here I'm not sure. Will people think she's a "quitter"? Who else does the GOP have? Huckabee? That's a laugh. She might end up with a talk show like him, who knows?

Huckabee in any context would be a nightmare hardly a dream. We'll have to see how things shape up for Palin, now that she is free she can travel to all 57 states.

I also thought Mccain hit it out of the park with Palin but changed my mind quickly. Not sure why the left is obviously so intimidated by her but its easy to see. I dont see her electable, shes trying to be too cute. I dont believe we have ever seen the real Palin to judge. Obama fiscal debacle soon to come will probably allow any swinging "tom dick or harry" to be elected. Me I want a fiscal conservative and dont care what party produces him or her.

I also believe we are going to face some serious challenges in the next three years. Inflation I'm not so sure of, but I'm assuming gas prices will shoot up again, and who knows what kind of international crises are heading our way. And then we will find out what Obama is made of. He could fall on his face like Carter, or rise to the occasion like FDR. The 2010 elections could be an interesting preview.

CM & Dale - I honestly don't see "the left" being intimidated by Palin. They believe she is a clown. The farther left they are, the more she amuses them.
Palin has a certain appeal lacking in the Republican party of the last decade. She is a fresh set of eyes from the outside, she has youth and if you want a change in attitude in DC, then the state of Alaska is a great place to find it.
On the other hand there is a lot playing against her. I don't believe she has been unfairly vilified because I think there is a lot of validity to the criticisms levelled against her.
While she may be a renegade she is also a loose cannon, for starters. Just making up stories and having snappy answers prepared at the debates and calling Biden "ole Joe" and soccer-momming her way through interviews, does not show her abilities to lead.
Her husband is/was a member of the one party whose stated existence is to get Alaska to secede from the union. She fumbled around with that detail and perhaps it was her naivete that led her to believe that if she just made up a story that Todd checked the wrong box on his voter registration card, everyone would overlook the fact that he was in the group for nearly eight years, AND just the year before the election she sent a videotaped address to the Alaskan Independence Party's convention. You can't just say, well, he meant to mark "independent" and that's how we got connected to the secession movement. That doesn't fly in the lower 48.
When apportioning blame for her lack of viability on a presidential level, I think you're giving too much credit to the mean old MSM and not enough to her.
She seems to always make odd, strange, seriously disconnected decisions. She stands right in front of a turkey being slaughtered while giving an interview. She said Obama "pals around with terrorists". She goes to Saturday Night Live and participates in her own mocking. While she decried government waste she took per diem payments in Alaska to STAY HOME. She wrote off trips to take the kids to plays or some such thing. That shopping spree, for Pete's sake. And don't even get me started on HER rch ;-)
These are all "fair game" topics.
Now, I don't think she had a shot in 2012 anyway. She doesn't. This latest move doesn't help. Don't expect to see her on anybody's ticket that election cycle.
I generally have a pretty good feel for how things will play out in the political arena, and I will tell you that after a day to ruminate, I still can't figure out what the hell she could be thinking.
I mentioned over at 760 that I wonder if the fact that she can make ten times her governor's salary in speaking engagements has anything to do with the decision. She'll make a mint just campaigning for people and she'll catch a few more Yankee games while she's at it. But there is no getting around the fact that she's just bailing right out on the Alaskan people.
Her spokesperson said Palin was making a "fighter's move". Quitting is a "fighter's move"?
And I repeat, I don't think anyone is afraid of her.
Just my 2 cents.

Obama was elected with a very shady list of associations that were ignored imo because bush was so offensive. If he can keep the scam going as long as madoff he will be reelected if not any warm body will be next.

Senator Mark Begich had a meeting with Palin two days before she announced her resignation and she said nothing nor indicated anything, "It was business as usual" said Begich. Apparently, according to close observers, her family didn't know about it until it was announced. "I don't care why she resigned, I just want her gone", said Ruth Parnell, a waitress. According to the Anchorage Daily News (admitidly an anti Palin newspaper, although Republican) she has dropped below 50% approval, down from over 80% a year ago. A poll at radio station KFAT showed 92% of the listeners were glad she resigned. The results may not be reflective of Alaska as a whole, KFAT is a hip hop station.(In Alaska??) A right wing talk show host has been suspended for a week w/o pay. A group called "Alaskans Tired of Palin" was to host a rally against Palin. Eddy Burke of KBYR, called Charla Stern and Iona Besseney, leaders of the group, "socialist baby killing maggots". That was not the reason he was suspended. He also gave out their personal cell phone numbers and urged listeners to " call and give them a piece of your mind". Both women were flooded with obscene and threatening calls. When asked if she supported Burke's behavior, Palin went into a long, winding statement, relating it somehow the global warming and it's "myths". YOU BETCHA. her family didn't know about it until it was announced. "I don't care why she resigned, I just want her gone", said Ruth Parnell, a waitress. According to the Anchorage Daily News (admitidly an anti Palin newspaper, although Republican). Get the quote and person right and put it into perspective:Palin's departure can't come soon enough for Laurel Carlton, a waitress at the Capital Cafe in the Baranof Hotel, where the city's political movers and shakers meet every morning before walking a few blocks to the Capitol. "I think she has a game plan that's not Alaska, and hasn't been for awhile," Carlton said. She noted Palin has a book deal, and seems headed for the national stage. "If you're really not going to stay and do your job every day, you should leave anyway, and so the sooner the better so somebody can step in and actually do the job," Carlton said. And as far as Carlton is concerned, Palin doesn't need to explain why she's leaving. "We don't care. We just want her gone," she said. As for her family not knowing, that is BULL! They had a family meeting and even held a poll on what each person thought. After everyone stated "Yeah" and one "Hell Yeah" it was sealed that she would resign!
For those who wish to spread rumors about her:The abruptness of her announcement and the mystery surrounding her plans have fed widespread speculation. But Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein on Saturday warned legal action may be taken against bloggers and publications that reprint what he calls fraudulent claims. "To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as 'fact' that Governor Palin resigned because she is 'under federal investigation' for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation," Van Flein said in a statement. "This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law." He also told the Anchorage Daily News that Palin wasn't in any criminal legal jeopardy. "I can say definitively I am aware of no criminal investigation whatsoever involving Sarah Palin. Zero," he said. From the Associated PressNote: I would not likely support her even if she gets the nomination for the Republican Party, which I doubt will happen. Of course, they need to come up with different candidates than they did in the last election or I won't support them again. The only one I could have supported was out before it got to California anyway so I voted 3rd party.

Of course her lawyer is going to threaten legal action. Ms. Parnell is a waitress at Denny's, there is more than one waitress in Alaska. She is no relation to the new governor of Alaska. Reaction among Republicans is mixed; most are not sure what she is thinking. Democrats are laughing.
