I believe Costco is Union. That is why I shop there. Not that it doesn't sell the same Chinese crap as Wal-Mart. I asked someone yesterday that should know and she said Costco is some sort of hybrid, whatever that means, when I get some time I'll research.

I wonder what a hybrid is. I would think a place is either union or non -union. True, most of the non food items are from China, but the clothes tend to be name brand and not all that cheap. I guess there are few clothes made in the USA. And of course electronics products are not made here either.

There are many businesses who have an option to join or not join the unions. A unionized company that makes it mandatory to join the union is called a "closed shop". It is this type of business that I mostly disapprove of. Most government position are open to choice of being in a union or not.

The "Open Shop" theory does not work with Construction trades. You are or are not which is why we had to change our terminology from "Open" to "Merit Shop". This has to do with State Apprenticeship programs and benefits plans which can not overlap or interact.

I guess I’m not union material.

San Diego Unified School Board persisted with signing the UNION ONLY PLA labor agreement last night and have now proven the union payback is above all common sense! In so doing they have Frauded the voters on the $2.4 Billion dollar PROP S bond and opened the door to some serious debate, law suits and recall actions.
We will see if it is worth the risk of being stupid.

I understand that where being a member of he union is optional, only union members can vote on new contracts. Non-union members thus have no say in the matter.

The nonunion member (employee) does not need to vote on a contract that does not apply to them. They compete and excel on the merit of their individual effort and are neither propelled forward or held back by virtue of the will of the union. It's called Freedom and Right To Work!

As long as profit exists, employees need protection.
Im sure unions arent perfect,,,nothing is...but someone needs to protect the employees. You cant count on government or the Private industry to care...
can anyone say Enron, IAG, etc.....

As long as profit exists, employees need protection. OH MY GOD KARL MARX SAVE US. I'm one of those guys that laid my ass on the line and risked it all to MAKE A PROFIT, I did it by working and working and working, something unions guys don't understand.

My deep military family risked their lives for American Freedom Profit/Greed, I dont think my family was thinking about that in fox holes... but to each his own. I value your service as I value EVERY AMERICAN'S SERVICE.

OK, now I will tell you why we need Unions, or at least the threat of Unions: To keep management doing the right thing. Screw things up, and we'll be at your gates.

Not only that, but here is the bottom line: In the workplace, bosses have all the power and don't want to share it with no stinkin' Unions...

That is like saying that you are the driver of the car and you don't want anybody else touching the steering wheel while you are driving! You already have laws & regulations to follow, but you know where you are going and it isn't likely to be the same place as the other person who is trying to grab your steering wheel!
