I debated whether to put a question mark at the end of the title of this thread. Is the homeless problem class war or not? Class war is such an outdated theory now. But does it still occur? An article in the NYT titled “A sandwich shop and an America crisis” talks about the clash between the homeless and a small business owner in Phoenix. Is that Class War? By the way, why would a homeless person live in Phoenix when they could live in San Diego? Circumstance, I suppose. I have been reluctant to start a homeless thread because it is such a vast subject that I know very little about. Not that that has stopped me before. We don’t even have homeless in my “posh” neighborhood. But we do have dozens of Mexican laborers.

I’m already sorry I started this thread. The more I think about the more I realize how little I know on the subject. I can say that homelessness is a symptom of something. Stuck my neck out, no?

Only third post in this thread and I’m already going off on a tangent. Here’s a byline from the NYT: “ As Haiti’s Police Retreat, Gangs Take Over Much of the Capital”. Obvious Class War in Haiti? What else can gang warfare be? Would people in Eastern Europe, who I suspect have contempt for the concept call it that? What role did religion have for their rejection of Class War? Could religion solve the gang problem? Do they have gangs in Cuba? Are gangs and homelessness symptoms of the same problem? Probably not. Unless you consider both of them failures of law enforcement. Do they have homelessness in Cuba? As I said elsewhere, I have many questions few answers unlike Sean Hannity, who has all the answers.

So who are the adversaries in the Class War on our streets? Well, the traditional ones: Merchants vs the poor. Shop owners have always battled with beggars and shoplifters. Add to that another menace to downtown San Diego restaurateurs: Street vendors, illegal or otherwise. And of course, business owners have political clout. Not that I care, I just find it amusing. Free Enterprise is so messy.

The Democratic County DA is suing the no-doubt Democrat-run City of Sacramento over the homelessness ‘crisis’. Goes to show what conservatives claim may be true that when push comes to shove liberals go rightward. Well, from my perspective the difference between middle-class Democrats and middle-class Republicans are minimal. So what is the solution to homelessness? I’m sure Carl DeMaio has it, since he knows everything. How do you solve drug addiction and insanity and the breakdown of the extended family? Good thing AI is on its way.

From the interweb: “Cuba currently enjoys a near-zero rate of homelessness. This is primarily due to high levels of housing subsidies from the government as well as a cultural tradition of multifamily homes where many members of the extended and nuclear family all share one residency”. Any ideas there for us? Not really. Taxpayers aren’t going to go along with the first even if housing was available and extended families in cramped apartments is something Americans have been trying to get away from since the end of the 19th Century. I don’t see a lot of people trying to break into Cuba either.

Another fight on the streets: The war against street vendors.

Changed the title of this thread from “Struggle on the Streets” to “Struggle for the Streets” because I think the question may be who owns the streets?
