The deployment includes two Army infantry companies and one platoon equipped to clear away roadside bombs. The soldiers are expected to leave for Iraq within the next 36 hours. The troops, about 240 soldiers in all, are from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., and will reinforce the more than 5,000 troops the United States already has in Iraq. The troops’ mission is not to engage in direct front-line combat, but the operation will put them in dangerous areas. The infantry companies, military officials said, will protect the United States’ continuing effort to advise and assist Iraqi forces as they push into western Mosul." So how goes the big party in Mosul after almost 6 months? Well, the eastern half of Mosul is "liberated", and getting back to "normal", whatever normal in Iraq is. They are still working on prying out IS fighters in the western half, if those pesky civilians would get out of the way. Apparently 200 didn't just the other day, but that's all in a day's work. The good guys have to destroy it to save it.

I would post something from the NYT but b would just call it fake news, so I'll just comment on Mr. Trump attacking a Syrian airbase. I was surprised, and I LIKE to be surprised. If I had bet the farm that he would do nothing except a sharply worded tweet, I would have lost the farm. It may be only one airbase, but it is a start. As I said when the Syrian uprising started, we could poke a stick in the eye of both Russia and Iran by taking out Assad. Well, this is far short of that (and I still think we should do it), but it is better than nothing. What would Hillary have done? We'll never know.

nypost.com/2017/04/07/russia-releases-footage-of-syrian-air-base-after-us-strike/"The Russian Defense Ministry has released aerial footage of the damaged Shayrat air base in Syria after it was pounded by US cruise missiles. Russia said only 23 of the 59 missiles fired from US warships hit their mark, but that six Syrian jets and several buildings were destroyed in the attack." What? Only 23 of the 59 missiles fired hit their mark? That's $57.6M in wasted Tomahawks! I'd sue Raytheon if I was the Pentagon! But looking at the Russkie video, what I don't see is craters to make the airbase unusable. Is Fearless Leader pulling a fast one on the American public? Was this about the wimpiest thing Trump could do militarily? You tell me.

So our Fearless Leader has diverted the Carl Vinson from Australia to a location close to NK. I guess the positive reaction given his sham missile attack (planes were flying out of the field the next day) on Assad means he might want to repeat it on NK's Fearless Leader. Dueling lunatics! I can dig it, though I wouldn't want to be in Seoul once it started.

Awesome! I bet the Pentagon had a Pentagasm over getting to use a Really Bigass Bomb(RBB)in Afghanistan! And it only cost $15M! I guess we'll have to buy a lot more. Jobs, jobs, jobs.

So the kill scorecard for the RBB is now up to 94 dead "militants". Wow! For only $15M a pop, that comes out to about $150,000 per dead bad guy! That's almost Vietnam prices! Of course, that's still an awful lot compared to the savings you could get with a nuke. Suppose a nuke costs about $50M (I really have no idea how much they cost, I'm just guessing), and kills 500,000 rotten North Korean men, women, and children. That's a measly $100 a corpse! Awesome!

So our religious fanatic VP is the latest to rattle a sabre at NK. He brought up our wimpy missile strike on Assad and the US using a big ass bomb in Afganistan on undefended militants, trying to scare NK I guess. (By the way, it had to be dropped out of a cargo plane as it was too big to fit in any of our bombers. Let's see the Pentagoon bigwigs try to fly a cargo plane over NK!) Do you think NK feels threatened? NK's military is probably laughing their asses off.

The attack began early in the day as the Ninth Division of the Iraqi Army and Interior Ministry troops who had been pulled from another combat assignment started pushing into Mosul from the north, according to an Iraqi military statement. The Iraqi Counterterrorism Service has been clawing its way from the south, and the goal of the new operation is to force the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, to fight in multiple directions and collapse its defenses. Hinting at the change of strategy, Lt. Gen. Othman al-Ghanmi, the Iraqi Army’s chief of staff, recently told a state-run newspaper that the battle for Mosul, now in its seventh month, would be won “in a maximum of three weeks.” Oh boy, another Big Push into Mosul. It's taken the Iraqi Army seven months and it still hasn't killed a few thousand (maybe less than a thousand now) ISIS militants even with American air support. Maybe Fearless Leader will let the generals take the gloves off and obliterate the part of the city still controlled by ISIS no matter how many civilians die. Victory is worth it, isn't it?

Thirty-six civilians who were believed to have been in the area have not been accounted for. The toll is one of the highest in the American-led campaign against the Islamic State, though the investigation asserts that jihadists’ explosives were mainly at fault. Neither the American-led coalition nor Iraqi forces were aware that civilians and explosives were in the building, the investigation concluded. According to the investigation, which was overseen by Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew C. Isler, the episode began on that March morning when two Islamic State snipers in the city’s Jidideh section began firing at troops from Iraq’s Counterterrorism Service, which was fighting its way into west Mosul." Is this fake news,b? They are just parroting a Pentagon report. But whatever. What cracks me up is the chicken Iragi forces called in an airstrike in a crowded city to take out TWO lousy snipers. How many thousands does one airstrike cost? Oh well, we're made of money and if we hadn't spent it on that we would have wasted it on education or healthcare for Americans. We have priorities.
