I think we should keep in mind that TV programs from Palestinian stations broadcast children's shows that teach hatred of Israel and how it is a good thing to martyr oneself for their cause.
This is not something that can be laid on former President Bush. These kinds of sentiments were around long before he was ever in office. It is unreasonable to lay the blame for islamist extremism on any one president.
Remember 1993?
Hatred against any American president is against the President du Jour. Obama may well feel the same sting.
Factoring in America's middle east policies is fine. Larry has made good arguments about this. What is hard to rationalize, for me anyway, is how one explains the rise of the fundamental islamist movements in a purely religious context.

This is video of Hamas rocket and mortar launches taken by Israeli military. This is not to say there are never launches from forests or canyons, but these do seem to be from urban areas that by definition would be filled with civilians. Does not Hamas bear some burden for civilian casualties if they attack from urban areas?
How does Israel respond without harming human shields?

Israeli children sign their missiles ‘with love’ THIS is who our tax dollars support - an arrogant, war-like people who indoctrinate their children in the art of murderous and cavalier warfare. Dear Lebanese/ Palestinian/ Canadian/ American/ Muslim/ Christian/ Australian/ or Anyone else who stands in our way, DIE. Love, Israeli Kids Americans must learn the truth about ISRAEL - the Ultimate Glorified Killing Machine.

Like most conflicts, there are two sides.Little kids playing war, perhaps with real weapons, and little kids sign bombs with hate messages,it is not a simple good vs. evil.

For much of my life we have looked at the middle east as mostly us and them. There was a time when our three pillars were Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel. We have considered Jordan friendly as well, but we no longer have three pillars. I certainly would have trouble considering the Saudi's as truly our friends, and once we are gone I kind of doubt that we will be counting on Iraq to have our backs. We have always had Israel. There is the rub. When we do not have many friends in a region, and I am thinking of true friends, we are willing to tolerate or overlook much from the ones we have. Much like our history in Central and South America. At some point it seems that somebody has to see that rockets and tanks do not solve our disputes, they just create the next generation of combatants. Israel can bomb Hamas relentlessly. They can kill every adult capable of carrying a weapon, irregardless of whether they are even willing to or not, and in the end they are just eight years away from the next wave of Palestinians who want to destroy them.
I am not suggesting that Israel should abandon their security concerns, but clearly what they have done the last forty years and what they are doing now is clearly not the answer. In as much as children are not born into the world with feelings of hatred, we have to assume that both sides are teaching their children to hate and to kill. Maybe that is the first step.

If Israel had no weapons there would be no Israel. If the Palestinians had no weapons there would be no war!

If Israel had no weapons there would be no Israel. If the Palestinians had no weapons there would be no war! Very good Mark, If palestine was the only problem it would be simple. They are just the pawns in a bigger game. Wonder what senerio we would have had isreal been located elsewhere from the beginning.

The New York Times from 1943 is shocking."Jews caught on tape while racially target Nazis".Is this front page legitimate? If so,we've come a long way since 1943.Just one year before I was born.

Bruce, your first comment was the most sensible!
I think the problem is that the Palestinians do not want to share ANYTHING:land, area, or neighboring area with Israel! When Gaza was turned over to them, they destroyed the infrastructure because the Jews created it!!!! Does this make sense??? Now the Obama is placating them by his first interview al-Abiraya (sp?), yes this will send a message; but will it be the right one?
CM-great NYT front page!!!

The educating of children in hatred is the reason no resolution is possible. This brings about a belief that genocide is the solution in their minds. This cycle repeats every 25 or 50 years and by the time the next generation is grown their hate is fanatical. I worked with a serb a few years ago and have a croation neighbor, the hate they spew is unbelieveable. I asked my neighbor whose family was killed in the 40s by serbs if she could ever see the anamosity stopping between them. She said NO never and almost started crying.

Did none of you notice the 1943 NYT front page is a fraud? If so, you didn't let on.

Israel is also accused of using phosphorus as a weapon in Gaza, which is a war crime.
