This place is called "San Diego Scene" so I was wondering what everyone thinks are the best places to go in San Diego. My first recommendation to everyone who has never been there is to spend 5 bucks and visit The Cabrillo National Monument on a clear day. Where are your favorite places?

Presidio Park, Balboa Park, the Zoo, Wild Animal Park (maybe not now that families can no longer picnic on the set aside grounds), La Jolla, Wind & Sea, I would say the Children's Cove (Scripps) but it does have a certain "air." Diane Powers' small Bazaar, north of the travesty.

Tourists know the hot spots they are all documented in the travel books, Sea World, the Zoo, on and one those locations are known world wide or quickly discovered. When I encounter tourist I suggest places that you don’t see in the rags. San Diego is very unique. Within 90 minutes you can tangle your toes in the ocean, walk in the snow, and watch a lizard scoot across the hot sand in the desert. There is tons to see and do here. I may be a little snobbish but eating out is one of my passions. Between my wife and I there is not many places in San Diego we have not been. Tourists want to eat out, PF Chang's, Ruth Chris, Roy’s are not San Diego, directing tourist to your favorite San Diego eatery helps the tourist and helps our economy. A few of my choices: Saffron, India Street we eat there 2-4 times a month www.sumeiyu.com/rest.htm Outstanding Thai food. The Sake House, Encinitas, owners Uka and Whomeka, tell them Mark sent you and you will be treated like a king. Ask to be seated in my favorite chair the best seat in the house. Tomiko’s Encinitas, owner Nancy, ask to be seated at Sushi Chef Matsu, James or Nannomi’s station tell Matsu you like bass fishing, he will show you a picture of his largest catch, you will need to ask where we caught it, I was there. www.tomiko.com/ For Spanish, an old time favorite is La Gran Tapa on 4th or 5th Avenue downtown San Diego. The Market in Del Mar is first class and equals world class restaurants. The Pamplemousse Griill Del Mar, ask to be seated in Eric’s section (there are two Eric’s you want the tall thin one) tell Eric Mark sent you. Ask Eric about his art work. pgrille.com/God I could fill volumes on eateries and I could go on forever when it comes to late night coffee houses. This is the kind of info I provide tourist, I’m still communicating with a tourist to San Diego I met 15 years ago, you never know, friends are found everywhere. Hatch, I have not been to VOR’s house, unlikely I would be welcome.

For Mexican food.I love Casa Sanchez on Adams.Saigon on El Cajon and Highland is good for inexpensive Vietnamese-Chinese food.It noisy and cafeteria like setting but the food is good. The Red Sea is interesting with Ethiopean dishes but it's not for all.Babbo Grande on University and Park is another find, great food and I can walk there.I love Magnolias on Euclid for southern style food with the fried chicken that is fantastic. All of these eateries are quite modest in price and out of the ordinary.

It is hard for me to say just which is my favorite place in San Diego. It really has a lot going for it.
To be somewhere where you can just stand or sit and say this is a great place, I lean towards the Gas Lamp quarter.
For restaurants, I like Rei do Gado rrascarria and Emerald Chinese restaurant for Sunday brunch. We used love going to Casa de Bandini in Old Town for Mexican food. I can't say I've tried the other places mentioned here. For seafood, I thought MCormick and Schmick was pretty good.
In truth, we rarely venture down to San Diego for dining. I do all the cooking at home.
Last night we had Caldo de Res con Tomatillos y Chayote (Beef and vegetable soup). Tonight will be my Zuppa di Pesce Amalfi (similar to Ciopino)

One of our favorite spots for Sunday brunch is the champagne brunch at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island. The food might be somewhat ordinary, but you can't beat the fantastic view of San Diego Bay and the service is great. It's also one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego to walk off a little bit of the meal.

Ever think of expanding your business to include a restaurant? You could have a limited one or two item menu with a different special for each day.

Hatch
I’m a chief also and do most of the cooking at our home. I have been creating new boards and thought I should create one for cooking experiences, but reconsidered because I figured I might be the only one posting to it. Now I have reason, in the morning I’ll create a new board for “cooking and dining” experiences.
I bake bread on Sundays keep a couple of loaves for home and give the rest away. I’ve tried dozens of bread recipes and the one I’m using now is simple with awesome results.
We entertain frequently and sometimes large groups. I have even gone so far as to let guest select from a menu. It’s a lot of work but cooking is a true love. I do a lot of country French and northern Italian dishes. I always use organic produce; most of it is home grown.
One of my favorite fall salads:
Arugula, Ju Ju Bee, persimmon, pomegranate with a Myer lemon vinaigrette. My old standby is a Caesar salad which I have prepared now on three continents. Friends have me over as guest chef to cook when the have dinner parties, I get to pick the champagne for reward.
I look forward to sharing experiences with you.
Jack,
My father loved the Bali Hai, it would never fail, he always ordered “chicken of the gods.” The Bali Hai was his favorite place in SD and yes the setting is awesome. It has been open probably 30-40 years.

CM, I'd be very interested in the new board.
I love conjuring up in particular Szean, Hunan, Indian, Thai, Italian and Mexican. Slow wood smoked meats is a specialty.
Breads... I need pointers. Period.

I've been home brewing beer for about 8 years and even made a few batches of wine, but I'm no gourmet when it comes to cooking. My wife and I cook our own meals because we can never agree on what to eat and if I can't bake mine in the oven at 350 for about an hour, it's not on my menu.
