Hard day on the farm but I finally got my corn planted. The nighttime soil temperature is about 5 degrees cooler than I’d prefer but hell it’s mid-May and I gotta get stuff planted or I’ll not have a season. The goal is to get three crops of corn this year. Today’s planting should be ready for harvest 3rd week of July. I’ll plant another crop mid-June followed by and mid-July planting.
Tomato cages and irrigation set, the plants have been growing under lights, they’ll hit the ground this weekend. Beans are a little more cold tolerant (soil temps can be in the low 60’s) and were planted about 10 days ago they have all popped.
Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, beets, kale, cabbage, lettuce, peppers, snow peas, snap peas, radicchio, fennel, potatoes, cucumber and 7 varieties of beans are all doing well. This looks like the best year yet for broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts but its nature and anything can go wrong. I’ve learned long ago not to get my hopes up.

An irrigation riser, cap and emitter, total cost about $1.75. This is what happens when young pup coyotes try out their needle teeth. It’s not about the water when all they would have to do is walk a few hundred yards. It’s a pain in the ass to fix, little bits of plastic fall in the riser and the water pressure will push the plastic down the line clogging additional emitters. So a 5 minute fix takes 30 minutes.

Snow peas picked today. I'll pick morning and evening yielding about 5 pounds per days.

Another experiment. Green plastic mulch is laid out over irrigation tubing then holes created and the eggplant plant inserted. The plants were started indoors under high pressure sodium lights. The plastic warms the ground and blocks sunlight so weeds don't grow. The white stuff is a mixture of kaolin clay and potassium. Soft body bugs hate kaolin then slugs and snails consume and overdose on potassium. All of it is certified organic by OMRI. About 3 weeks away from first harvest.

Picked beans today and sweat like a stuffed hog. The temperature between crop rows runs 10-15 degrees warmer and the humidity is stifling.
Time to get back to work.
