It is hard for me to say just which is my favorite place in San Diego. It really has a lot going for it. To be somewhere where you can just stand or sit and say this is a great place, I lean towards the Gas Lamp quarter. For restaurants, I like Rei do Gado rrascarria and Emerald Chinese restaurant for Sunday brunch. We used love going to Casa de Bandini in Old Town for Mexican food. I can't say I've tried the other places mentioned here. For seafood, I thought MCormick and Schmick was pretty good. In truth, we rarely venture down to San Diego for dining. I do all the cooking at home. Last night we had Caldo de Res con Tomatillos y Chayote (Beef and vegetable soup). Tonight will be my Zuppa di Pesce Amalfi (similar to Ciopino) Over the years I recall Hatch describing many delicious meals that he has cooked. If we only had the address....... Ever think of expanding your business to include a restaurant? You could have a limited one or two item menu with a different special for each day. My thoughts too!

Hatch I’m a chief also and do most of the cooking at our home. I have been creating new boards and thought I should create one for cooking experiences, but reconsidered because I figured I might be the only one posting to it. Now I have reason, in the morning I’ll create a new board for “cooking and dining” experiences. I bake bread on Sundays keep a couple of loaves for home and give the rest away. I’ve tried dozens of bread recipes and the one I’m using now is simple with awesome results. We entertain frequently and sometimes large groups. I have even gone so far as to let guest select from a menu. It’s a lot of work but cooking is a true love. I do a lot of country French and northern Italian dishes. I always use organic produce; most of it is home grown. One of my favorite fall salads: Arugula, Ju Ju Bee, persimmon, pomegranate with a Myer lemon vinaigrette. My old standby is a Caesar salad which I have prepared now on three continents. Friends have me over as guest chef to cook when the have dinner parties, I get to pick the champagne for reward. I look forward to sharing experiences with you. Jack, My father loved the Bali Hai, it would never fail, he always ordered “chicken of the gods.” The Bali Hai was his favorite place in SD and yes the setting is awesome. It has been open probably 30-40 years. I like that idea!

Bruce, have you tried the Ethiopian restaurant in Encinitas? No,but I will soon,is there a name or location? Then again there are not too many Ethiopean restraunt in Encinitas,it's probably on PCH,Encinitas Blvd,or El Camino Real, A friend introduced me to this restaurant and she always drove, so I didn't pay attention. I think it's on PCH, the building is unpretentious, but I had an extraordinary Lentil dish that was delicious! I will email her for the name and get back to you.

Lou, Bruce, could you give me an idea about Ethiopian food? I had a Lentil dish that was wonderful, it had some meat, possibly pork and a peanut sauce that had a slight bite, delicious! It also had fresh spinach mixed immediately before serving.

Ethiopean food can be spicy, both vegetarian or meat dishes. It is usually served with a flat bread whose name I can't recall. The dishes I get usually have a slice underneath and some on the side that you can use to eat with in lieu of utensils. The bread is thicker than a tortilla but the size of a super large flour tortilla. The food is like a thick stew,I usually have lamb.It is probably an aquired taste, most of the patrons of the Red Sea are Ethiopeans.

Lou,
On the corner of PCH and Encinitas Blvd, is Leucadia Pizza and El Callejón Mexican Restaurant, pretty sure that’s it. We will be at Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real in the morning, I’ll look for the Ethiopian Restaurant.
Sounds scrumptious Bruce, I want to try.

I recently found a somewhat hidden, but fantastic neighborhood park in Rancho Penasquitos. It's called Hilltop Community Park and it's a gem with fantastic views all the way to the ocean, a recreation facility, playgrounds, gazebos, huge open grass area and you can still drink adult beverages there during certain hours of the day. www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/centers/hilltop.shtmlThe best part is that it's not someplace that would attract the homeless or gangs because of its relatively remote location.
