[quote author=" jdredd" source= FAKE NEWS ALERT! NYT IS FAKE NEWS! SDS DOES NOT CONDONE FAKE NEWS! "MOSUL, Iraq — Dressed in a military uniform, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived here in Mosul on Sunday to congratulate Iraq’s armed forces for wresting the city from the Islamic State. The victory marked the formal end of a bloody campaign that lasted nearly nine months, left much of Iraq’s second-largest city in ruins, killed thousands of people and displaced nearly a million more." Looking at the pictures, it looks like American air power destroyed Mosul to save it. Oh well, the American taxpayer's bottomless pockets will pay for it's rebuilding.[/quote] Answer The question! Wheres your proof??

While the "experts" continue to predict an easy victory in a war with NK, it is possible that NK will not be another Iraq. What measures is Kim taking so he will not be another Saddam?

Forces from Russia, Turkey and the United States are also on the ground in Syria in a war with multiple fronts and multiple factions, including the remnants of the Islamic State and other Islamist militant groups. In the past week, aircraft from three foreign countries have been brought down in the conflict: the Israeli plane; a Turkish helicopter shot down, also on Saturday, as it attacked Kurdish militias; and a Russian plane over Idlib that was bombing rebel-held territory."

Two aircraft and a helicopter shot down. You know what that means? Yes, they will have to be replaced. War is not only fun (that is, if YOU don't die), it's profitable!

www.nytimes.com/2019/03/19/opinion/trump-defense-industry.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage"On Wednesday, President Trump will visit Lima, Ohio, to tour the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, one of America’s premier defense facilities and the last tank factory in the Western Hemisphere. The story of the day may be about how the Trump administration saved the Lima plant from a near-death experience under President Barack Obama. The story for the history books, however, is about how the factory perfectly encapsulates President Trump’s maxim “economic security is national security.” The Lima factory, operated by General Dynamics, builds the M-1 Abrams, the Army’s main battle tank. This heavily armored war horse played a key role in both the liberation of Kuwait during the Persian Gulf war in the early 1990s and the Iraq war beginning in 2003. It remains a stalwart of Army operations today. In 2012, the Obama administration sought to close the Lima plant as part of the mandated budget sequestration process. Fortunately, the Republican-led Congress rejected that move and appropriated enough funds to keep the factory in business — but the number of employees fell sharply, to just 75." Here is Peter Navarro, local neer-do-well, giving us his newfound expertise on military affairs. This is his resume:While teaching at UC Irvine, Navarro ran unsuccessfully for office in San Diego, California five times.[7][17] In 1992 he ran for mayor, finishing first (38.2%) in the primary, but lost with 48% to Susan Golding in the runoff.[28] During his mayoral campaign, Navarro ran on a no-growth platform.[29] In 1993 he ran for San Diego city council and in 1994 for San Diego County board of supervisors.[17] In 1996, he ran for the 49th Congressional District as the Democratic Party nominee, but lost to Republican Brian Bilbray, 52.7% to 41.9%.[30] In 2001, Navarro ran in a special election to fill the District 6 San Diego city council seat, but lost in a special election with 7.85% of the vote.[31]

www.nytimes.com/2019/06/13/world/middleeast/oil-tanker-attack-gulf-oman.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage§ion=World"The attacks in May on the four tankers near Fujairah were relatively minor, causing only limited damage to the hulls. An international investigation presented to the United Nations later concluded that the damage was done by divers deployed from small “fast boats” who had placed limpet mines against the hulls. On a visit to the United Arab Emirates about two weeks ago, John R. Bolton, President Trump’s national security adviser, said Iran was “almost certainly” responsible. A few days later, Mr. Pompeo called the attacks “efforts by the Iranians to raise the price of crude oil.” So what is Trump waiting for? Iraq invaded Kuwait because Kuwait was driving the price of oil down, and Bush 41 had a fun war with them (remember the "Highway of Death"?)! Come on Trumpy, I dare you! Gas prices PROBABLY won't go way up, considering the oil glut.

www.nytimes.com/2019/06/14/opinion/iran-oil-tanker-attack.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage"What is appropriate is a new set of rules — with swift consequences if Iran chooses to break them. The Trump administration ought to declare new rules of engagement to allow the Navy to engage and destroy Iranian ships or fast boats that harass or threaten any ship, military or commercial, operating in international waters. If Tehran fails to comply, the U.S. should threaten to sink any Iranian naval ship that leaves port. If after that Iran still fails to comply, we would be right to sink its navy, in port or at sea. The world cannot tolerate freelance Somali pirates. Much less should it tolerate a pirate state seeking to hold the global economy hostage through multiplying acts of economic terrorism. Nobody wants a war with Iran. But not wanting a war does not mean remaining supine in the face of its outrages. We sank Iran’s navy before. Tehran should be put on notice that we are prepared and able to do it again." The usual suspects beating the war drums. Should we be "outraged" at fun and games in the Saudi-Iran rivalry? "The world cannot tolerate freelance Somali pirates". More Great War rhetoric! I love it.

www.nytimes.com/2019/09/07/us/politics/trump-taliban-afghanistan.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage"WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Saturday that he had canceled a secret meeting at Camp David with Taliban leaders and the president of Afghanistan and had called off monthslong negotiations with the Afghan insurgent group that appeared to be nearing a peace agreement. “Unbeknownst to almost everyone,” Mr. Trump wrote in a series of tweets, Taliban leaders and the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, were headed to the United States on Saturday for what would have been a historic Sunday meeting at Camp David. But Mr. Trump angrily said that “in order to build false leverage,” the Taliban had admitted to a suicide car bomb attack on Thursday that had killed an American soldier and 11 others in the capital of Kabul. “I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations,” he wrote. “If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway,” Mr. Trump wrote. “ How many more decades are they willing to fight?” Ya mean how many more decades are the Taliban willing to fight to lift the foreign occupation of their country? Probably as many as it takes. But good thing I put no faith in Trumpty's pathetic attempts to end our involvement. I would guess he gave into the special interests who want us there forever, some of whom I have noted on this board before. Once again, no Nobel Peace prize for Trumpty.

www.nytimes.com/2019/09/21/us/politics/trump-iran-decision.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage"WASHINGTON — By the time President Trump met with congressional leaders on the afternoon of June 20, he had already decided to retaliate against Iran for shooting down an American surveillance drone. But for once, he kept his cards close to the vest, soliciting advice rather than doing all of the talking. “Why don’t you go after the launch sites?” a Republican lawmaker asked. “Well,” Mr. Trump replied with a hint, “I think you’ll like the decision.” But barely three hours later, Mr. Trump had changed his mind. Without consulting his vice president, secretary of state or national security adviser, he reversed himself and, with ships readying missiles and airplanes already in the skies, told the Pentagon to call off the airstrikes with only 10 minutes to go. When Vice President Mike Pence and other officials returned to the White House for what they expected would be a long night of monitoring a military operation, they were stunned to learn the attack was off." I have to say it: Trump showed unusual (for him) common sense in not going to war over the pretext of a stupid drone.

www.nytimes.com/2019/10/10/world/middleeast/syria-turkey-offensive.html"AKCAKALE, Turkey — Turkish forces and their Syrian Arab allies swept into northern Syria on Thursday, killing at least 23 Kurdish fighters in a sharp escalation of a campaign against a Kurdish-led militia that had fought alongside the United States against the Islamic State. The Turkish assault, which began on Wednesday after President Trump acceded to it and moved American troops out of the way, has pulled the militia out of its fight against the remnants of the Islamic State in Syria." www.nytimes.com/2019/10/14/world/middleeast/turkey-syria.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage“The E.U. condemns Turkey’s military action, which seriously undermines the stability and the security of the whole region, resulting in more civilians suffering and further displacement and severely hindering access to humanitarian assistance,” the ministers said. The legal and practical elements of such a move are complicated: Like most European Union nations, Turkey is a NATO member. European officials decided that the best way to enforce the ban was through suspending licensing for arms sales in individual European capitals, making it a national move." Will Assad and Turkey go into full war? One can hope, but the odds are probably small. If you believe NPR, the Russkis are calling the shots for both Syria and Turkey.

www.nationalreview.com/news/us-airstrike-kills-qassim-soleimani-iranian-terrorist-leader/A U.S. airstrike struck a convoy in Baghdad airport Thursday night, killing Iranian Major-General Qassim Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, according to multiple reports. Soleimani was the most prominent military leader in Iran and the long-running leader of the Quds Force, which the U.S. designated a terror group in 2007. It is the intelligence and counterespionage wing of the regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. A spokesman for Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces umbrella grouping of Iran-backed militias confirmed the deaths, saying “the American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassim Soleimani.” Over an hour after news first broke, the Pentagon confirmed Soleimani’s death late Thursday night, saying that Soleimani had approved the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad this past week, and was “actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.” That's what power means: The ability to do something to someone else without them being able to retaliate. Which is why everyone wants it. Even Christians with their laughable Golden Rule.

We just passed the 76th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While the debate will continue forever whether it was justified, I think that there was no choice. Truman could not let himself be accused of any more American lives lost if he didn’t use them. Which brings up the whole question of Free Will, or lack thereof.

Just like when the Khmer Rouge rolled into Phnom Penh, how could you expect the Taliban to roll into Kabul without a bad attitude after being subject to countless air strikes they had no defense against?
