OK, so California is having a drought. That's better than having a drought of tolerance like Indiana, Arkansas, etc.

america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/3/30/woman-who-says-she-miscarried-gets-20-years-in-prison.html"Reproductive rights advocates say Patel’s case isn’t the first instance in which a woman has been accused under fetal homicide laws. Although the laws were intended to deal with crimes against pregnant women and to target illegal abortion providers, they are increasingly used to prosecute women who miscarry, have stillbirths, try to terminate their own pregnancies or are accused of harming a fetus by taking drugs, according to Sara Ainsworth, legal director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW). “We are gravely concerned that this case represents a trend in punishing pregnant women for their pregnancy outcomes and demonstrates that women will be targeted for terminating their pregnancies, even though abortion opponents routinely claim that if abortion were re-criminalized in the U.S., no pregnant woman would be punished,” she said." So if you want to have the government decide if your miscarraige might be feticide (and we know how well law enforcement investigates things like that), stay in Indiana and risk 20 years in the slammer. The Pregnancy Police are already up and running.

www.nytimes.com/2015/04/10/opinion/kansas-tries-to-stamp-out-abortion.html?_r=0"During the past four years, the state of Kansas has become ground zero in the war to criminalize all abortions, and in the process to remove a woman’s ability to control what happens in her own body. Under Gov. Sam Brownback, a staunch foe of a woman’s right to choose, Kansas’ increasingly hard-line conservative lawmakers have enacted more than two dozen restrictions curtailing women’s reproductive freedom. These include, among many others, banning all abortions after 20 weeks, restricting health insurance plans from covering the procedure, defining life as beginning at fertilization, and forcing women to undergo ultrasounds, as well as to sit through medically inaccurate lectures, before ending a pregnancy." Such is ife in a SRBRF (State Run By Religious Fanatics). I feel sorry for young women who are too poor to move out. Is this the right's idea of "freedom", a term they throw around continually?

america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/4/24/governor-signs-bill-to-allow-guns-in-all-tennessee-parks.html"Local governments in Tennessee can no longer bar people with handgun carry permits from taking firearms to parks, playgrounds and sports fields under legislation signed by Republican Gov. Bill Haslam. The measure was introduced as a welcome gift from gun-friendly Tennessee lawmakers to the more than 70,000 people who attended the National Rifle Association's annual convention in Nashville earlier this month. The bill got tied up amid bickering between Republicans who control both the state House and Senate, and only passed once lawmakers agreed to remove the Capitol complex from the areas where permit holders could be armed." I thought RepubliCONS were into local control? Whatever. So, if you are like me and dislike guns, time to move out of Tennessee and move to California. We need all the help we can get to prevent California from becoming another Guns and Jesus state.

I changed the name of this thread to something a little more fun, because frankly California's motto, "The Golden State", is a big yawn. IMHO we should change it to "The Love State", because unlike some other states (and you know who you are), we LOVE gays, Mexicans legal and illegal, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, hippies, pacifists, religious cultists, you name it. And if the Supremely Stupid Court decides to throw gay marriage back to the states, then our doors are always open for gay married couples. COME ON IN!!!!

www.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/style/los-angeles-and-its-booming-creative-class-lures-new-yorkers.html?_r=0"It started with Instagram. Or maybe it ended with Instagram. Last fall, Christina Turner, a fashion stylist in Brooklyn, was dreading another New York winter in her cramped, lightless Greenpoint, Brooklyn, apartment while gazing longingly at the succulent gardens and festive backyard dinner parties posted on social media by her friends in Los Angeles. “I’d see all these old familiar faces of friends I once knew in New York, all seated at the same table,” said Ms. Turner, 32, who goes by the professional name Turner. She could resent them, or she could join them. So in November, Ms. Turner dumped her furniture on Craigslist, piled into her battered Honda Accord and headed west, not stopping until she found a light-filled two-bedroom cottage in Echo Park, a neighborhood in eastern Los Angeles that is a magnet for young creatives. In an era when it has become fashionable for New Yorkers to grumble that their own city is becoming a sterile playland for the global-money set (Dubai with blizzards, basically), Los Angeles is enjoying a renaissance with a burgeoning art, fashion and food scene that has become irresistible to the culturally attuned." And within a hundred miles of San Diego is Coachella, now the most important music event in the US. And San Diego still has Comic-con, the largest pop culture convention in the world. For now, at least. Nevada has Burning Man, though. And Austin has SXSW. Of course, New Orleans has Mardi Gras.

www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-scalia-wrath-california-and-hippies-20150626-htmlstory.html"As the United States of America evolves, slowly becoming a more tolerant and inclusive nation, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is getting left behind, and now he’s taking out his wrath on California and hippies. It’s not hard to understand why Scalia has worked himself into a lather. This has been a horrible week for him, as he voted with the losers on two landmark court rulings: Obamacare and gay marriage. He began with a somewhat rational dissent on Obamacare, hand-wringing over the “discouraging truth that the Supreme Court of the United States favors some laws over others, and is prepared to do whatever it takes to uphold and assist its favorites.” "But then he went from hand-wringing to knuckle-dragging on the gay marriage decision, arguing that the court was patrician, pretentious, egotistical and out of touch with America because its justices are successful lawyers (would we want otherwise?) who went to elite schools and grew up in either the elitist East or the wifty West but not the heartland or the South. “Not a single Southwesterner or even,” Scalia wrote, “to tell the truth, a genuine Westerner. ( California does not count.)” Do you hear that, Californians?" Ha-ha! Ancient dirtbag Scalia (b. 1936) dissed California! I wear that as a badge of honor.

www.politico.com/story/2015/08/koch-love-fest-in-california-120928.html?hp=c4_3"DANA POINT, Calif. — Charles Koch and his allies can often be skeptical of politicians of both parties, but the feeling does not seem to be mutual for the Republican candidates and officeholders who flocked to the donor summit convened here by Koch and his brother David Koch. A raft of Republican presidential candidates, senators, House members and governors heaped praise on the Kochs and their donors for their patriotism, commitment to free market ideals — and the hundreds of millions of dollars they’ve sunk into boosting conservative politicians and policies. The Kochs and the 450 donors gathered for a three-day political and policy summit here, organized by the Koch network’s umbrella group Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, are among the most generous conservative backers. Appearances at past meetings have boosted the campaigns of several aspiring Republican politicians. And many of the donors gathered at the St. Regis Monarch Beach luxury resort are being hotly courted by GOP presidential candidates, a number of whom met with donors on the conference’s sidelines, while also wooing them in group addresses." See, we Californians even love the Kochs. We just don't want them running OUR state (Wisconsin? Who cares?). BY the way, can you be both patriotic and committed to free market ideals? I'm not convinced.

But after Tuesday’s election, the states bordering the Pacific Ocean feel increasingly like an island unto its own. While large parts of the American electoral map, particularly in the industrial Rust Belt, turned more Republican in Tuesday’s election, California went more Democratic, with 61.5 percent of voters choosing Hillary Clinton, the highest percentage for a Democratic presidential nominee since the re-election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. On social policies, the election made the Rockies look more like a border than a mountain range. In a raft of ballot measures, voters embraced causes like bilingual education, stricter gun control and taxes on sugary drinks. Amid Donald J. Trump’s promises to slash taxes, voters in the West decided the opposite, raising taxes and voting to pour billions of dollars into schools and transportation. And the entire West Coast has legalized marijuana, now that California joined Washington and Oregon." I have a question for the enlightened people who are out of place in Trump-loving Rust Belt Loser states: Why are you still there? Save yourself, come to California.

Only a month has passed since the election, and the president-elect is no different from the candidate: erratic, self-contradictory, hazy on principles and policies. But states and cities that value immigrants, including the undocumented, do not have the luxury of waiting and hoping for the best. They are girding for a confrontation, building defenses to protect families and workers from the next administration. They fear that Mr. Trump, who ran on a pledge of mass deportation, dehumanizing immigrants and refugees, will remove humane discretion from immigration enforcement. They understand that not all unauthorized immigrants are criminals, that not all should be detained or deported and that the country cannot enforce its way out of its failure to reform unjust immigration laws." I'm proud I'm living in a state that is on the cutting edge of resistance to the Trump Reich. You can too!
